Help
How can we help?
How to connect your caller, load sounds and get them on your remote.
Getting started
HowlVault keeps your calling sounds in one vault on your phone and loads them onto your electronic caller.
What does HowlVault do?
HowlVault is a vault for your calling sounds. Add sounds from your phone, save the ones already on your caller, sort them into folders, and load them onto your caller with a tap. For FoxPro callers you can also build sequences.
Your vault lives on your phone, so it works in the field with no signal and no account.
Which callers does it work with?
FoxPro, including the X360 and X48 and older models like the Shockwave, HellCat, Patriot, X24 and many more. Lucky Duck (Revolt, Riot, Roughneck, Super Revolt and others). ICOtec Plus models and older ICOtec callers that take sounds.
Sealed callers that don't accept your own sounds can't be loaded.
When you connect a caller, HowlVault works out the brand. If it can't, it asks you to pick your brand and model.
How do I add sounds to my vault?
Tap + at the top of the Vault tab and pick files from your phone. HowlVault takes MP3, WAV, FXP, 24B, 16B, 32B, LD, WMA, GCX and AAF files, up to 200 MB each.
You can also save sounds that are already on your caller: open the On Caller tab and use Save to vault, or Save all to vault in the View menu.
A sound that's already in your vault isn't added twice, even under another name.
Do I need an account or a signal?
No. Your vault and your caller work entirely on your phone, with no account and no signal.
An account is only for the cloud: backing up your vault and keeping your phone and computer in step. See Cloud backup below.
Connect your caller
How do I connect my caller to my phone?
FoxPro callers plug straight into your phone with a USB-C cable.
Lucky Duck and ICOtec callers don't share their SD card over USB. Take the SD card out of the caller, put it in a USB-C card reader, and plug the reader into your phone.
Then tap Connect caller in HowlVault. The first time, your phone asks which drive to use (steps below). After that, HowlVault remembers your caller and connects when you plug it in.
Which phones work?
An iPhone with a USB-C port (iPhone 15 or newer) or an Android phone with USB-C.
Older iPhones with a Lightning port aren't supported.
iPhone: connecting for the first time
- Plug in your caller or card reader.
- In HowlVault, tap Connect caller. The Files app opens.
- If you don't see your caller, tap Browse at the bottom.
- Under Locations, tap your caller. It shows by name, for example X360 or LUCKYDUCK1.
- You'll see the folders on the caller. Tap Open in the top-right corner.
Android: connecting for the first time
- Plug in your caller or card reader.
- In HowlVault, tap Connect caller. The file picker opens.
- Tap the menu icon in the top-left to see your storage.
- Tap your caller or SD card (it shows the drive name, for example HIJACK or LUCKYDUCK1).
- Tap Use this folder at the bottom. Don't open any folders inside it.
- Android asks for permission to read and write the card. Tap Allow.
My caller doesn't show up or shows no sounds
Check that the cable or card reader is USB-C and fully plugged in, and that the caller is turned on if it needs to be.
Tap the caller name on the On Caller tab and tap Refresh. If that doesn't work, unplug the caller, turn it off and on, and plug it back in.
How do I unplug safely?
Tap Eject on the bar at the top of the screen and wait for Safe to unplug. If HowlVault is still writing to the caller, it tells you to wait.
Unplugging in the middle of a write can leave the caller's sound list half-finished.
Load sounds
How do I put sounds on my caller?
Open a sound in your vault and tap Push to caller, or tap Select, pick several sounds and tap Push. On callers with folders, HowlVault asks which folder they go in; you can make a new folder there too.
Before loading, HowlVault tells you about any sounds that can't go on this caller and why.
Keep HowlVault open and your screen on while it loads.
What does "Incompatible" mean?
The connected caller can't play that sound's file type, so HowlVault won't load it there. Each caller model takes its own formats; Lucky Duck callers, for example, take MP3 and LD files.
On a FoxPro X360 or X48, MP3 files are converted to WAV and FXP files to XFP as they load, so those work.
Why did my sound's name change on my X360 or X48?
X360 and X48 names can be 32 characters at most, with no dots and none of these characters: " * / : < > ? \ | ~ # % { } $ ! ' @ ` =. HowlVault shortens and cleans the name as it loads the sound, the way FoxPro's own software does.
Folder names on the X360 and X48 can be 30 characters at most, with no commas.
A sound is already on my caller. Can I load it again?
HowlVault never overwrites a sound on your caller. If a sound with the same name is already in that folder, it's skipped and HowlVault tells you.
Your remote
After you change what's on a FoxPro caller, your remote needs the new sound list. HowlVault reminds you and shows these steps.
My new sounds don't show on my TX2000 remote (X360 / X48)
- Unplug the caller. Its green light will blink while it updates. Wait until it stops.
- Turn the caller off, then back on.
- On the remote: Back/Menu → TX2000 Settings → Download List → Yes.
Keep the caller and remote on the same radio channel.
My new sounds don't show on my TX1000 remote
- Unplug the caller and turn it on.
- On the remote: Menu → TX1000 Settings → Download Sound List.
Keep the caller and remote on the same radio channel.
I have a different FoxPro remote
Unplug the caller, turn it on, and download the updated sound list on your remote. Your remote's manual shows where that is in its menu.
Sequences
Sequences are for FoxPro callers only: the X360 and X48, and older FoxPro models.
What is a sequence?
A sequence is a list your FoxPro caller plays by itself: sounds, breaks, volume changes and decoy moves. Start it from the remote and the caller runs it hands-free.
There are two kinds, and a sequence is made for one of them. X360 and X48 sequences are sound cards that each play for a set time, with modifiers. Older FoxPro sequences are a list of steps.
Where is the Sequences tab?
It shows up once HowlVault knows you have a FoxPro caller. To build sequences before you connect one, turn on Show Sequences in Settings.
How do I get a sequence onto my caller?
Plug in the caller it's for and tap Save to caller in the sequence. Any sounds it uses that aren't on the caller yet are copied over first. Then update your remote (see Your remote above).
What do "In sync" and "Needs sync" mean?
With a FoxPro caller connected, each sequence in your vault says whether the caller has the same version. Needs sync means the caller's copy is different or missing: tap Save to caller to update it.
HowlVault says sounds have moved on my caller
A sound the sequence uses is on your caller, but in a different folder than before. Tap Update references and save, and the sequence points to the new place.
Your vault
How do I make my own folders?
On the Vault tab, open the View menu and tap New folder. You can also tap New folder when you move sounds. Tap … on one of your folders to rename or delete it.
Folder order is in the View menu too: A to Z, Newest first, or Custom to arrange them yourself.
What happens to the sounds when I delete a folder?
They stay in your vault. They move to Uncategorized, or to a folder you pick.
I can't delete a sound. Why?
A sequence uses it. HowlVault lists the sequences and lets you delete them with the sound, or keep them and the sound.
Does deleting a sound from my vault remove it from my caller?
No. Copies already on a caller stay there. To remove a sound from the caller, delete it on the On Caller tab. HowlVault checks your vault first and offers Back up & Delete for sounds that aren't in it.
Cloud backup
The cloud is optional and needs a HowlVault account.
What does the cloud do?
It backs up your vault and keeps your phone and HowlVault Desktop in step. Your folders, sequences, sound names and folder order sync on their own. Sound files go up when you back them up and come down when you download or play them.
In Settings you can turn on Back up new sounds automatically.
How many devices can use my account?
The cloud works on 1 computer and 1 phone per account. You can remove a device from your account page, with 2 device changes every 12 months; after that, support can help.
HowlVault on your phone and HowlVault Desktop work without the cloud on any device.
What happens if I log out of the cloud?
Your vault stays on your phone. Log in again any time to back up and sync.
Troubleshooting
Sounds are on my X360 or X48 but not on the remote's list
In Settings, under Caller, tap Check and repair. HowlVault finds sounds that aren't on the caller's list and adds them, and removes entries with no file. Then turn the caller off and on and update your remote.
My sequence plays the wrong sound
Turn the caller off and back on after loading new sounds or sequences, so it reads its updated sound list. Then try the sequence again.
Loading stopped part way
Keep HowlVault open and your screen on while it loads; closing or locking the phone stops it. HowlVault tells you which sounds loaded and why any didn't. Plug in again and load the rest.
